Obituary for George Edward Young

George Edward Young, 72 of Pikeville passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones on December 29, 2014. He attended Cold Springs Church of Christ. George was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. One of his biggest attributes was his love for his community. He wore so many hats and served in so many capacities, all in the spirit of helping his fellow man. He was a Charter and Lifetime member of the Bledsoe County Rescue Squad, where he had formerly served as Captain and Unit Director. He was a Lifetime member of Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads or TARS, there he formerly served as both Region II VP and Chaplain. He also was a member of the Pikeville Volunteer Fire Department, for 49 years, where he formerly served as Chief for 17 years. He was instrumental in starting the EMS for Bledsoe County. He served as director of the Bledsoe County EMA. George also served as Chairman of the EMS Board, Hospital Board, Nursing Home Board, and of the Republican Party. He helped with 4H and was a little league baseball coach. He helped put on numerous safety and extrication classes for other volunteers in the county.
George worked in Emergency and Firefighting services for TVA and he enjoyed farming.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Joseph and Thelma (Hale) Young, brothers; Tommy, Bobby, and James Young, and a sister; Pauline Collins.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years; Earline VanWinkle Young, Pikeville, TN., son; Joseph Benjamin (Donna) Young, Franklin, TN., daughter; Cyndi (Jerry) Johnson, Pikeville, TN., grandsons; Keith Martin, Benjamin Young, Luke






and Jake Johnson, sister; Sara Young, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at the Cold Springs Church of Christ on Wednesday December 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Min. Ron Gilbert and Min. Tony Britt officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 4-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Pendergrass Cemetery with honors by local emergency agencies. Rescue squad members and Fire Department members will serve as pallbearers and all other emergency agencies will serve as honorary pallbearers.
