Obituary for Gilbert Lee McDaniel


Gilbert Lee McDaniel, age 84 of Pikeville, died Thursday, January 5, 2023. Gilbert was a member of Sequatchie Valley Church of Christ. He loved his family, was a great dad with good direction, and always there to give needed wisdom. Gil had a passion for helping people, was a fighter for helping those less fortunate, but mainly focused on helping win as many as he could make it to heaven. Gil served in the United States Army stationed in Germany for three years. He received his Bachelor and Master’s Degree in social work at Florida State University, and worked four years as Unit Director at Florida Sherriff’s Boys Ranch, and worked twelve years at Daniel Memorial in Jacksonville Florida where he helped developed and run five group homes for emotionally disturbed teenagers. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling around the world and taking cruises with his wife. He loved to sit and watch the world, was an Avid Alabama Football Fan, and liked to play a good game of pool.

Preceding Gilbert in death were his parents, Renley and Minnie Margaret Dandridge McDaniel.

Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-two years, Margaret Ann Smith McDaniel; sons, Baird McDaniel, Ron (Miriam) McDaniel, Darren (Edie) Bruce; daughters, Lisa (Dan) Thomas, Leanne (James) Zattiero; grandchildren, Kelsey (Joshua) Swim, Cassidy (Kyle) Smith, Tanner McDaniel, Tucker McDaniel, Trevor Bruce, Carson Bruce; close family friend, Lesley (David) Wells; and a host of friends.

A memorial service will be 2:00pm CST Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Sequatchie Valley Church of Christ with Bro. Dennis Smith. The family will receive friends 12:00pm-2:00pm at the church.
