Obituary for Janet McMullen Conger

Janet McMullen Conger 70, passed away on July 21, 2013 at her home, in Northport, Al. She was born on August 7th, 1942 in Washington, Pa to Glenn and Elsie (Smith) McMullen. Janet grew up in Washington, PA., where she graduated from Trinity High School in 1960. After high school, she attended John Robert Powers Modeling School in Pittsburgh Pa. She worked in the photography department at the Washington Observer-Reporter Newspaper in Washington. Janet married David O. Conger III in July 1962 in Fort Bragg NC. She moved to St. Petersburg Beach, FL where she worked with her husband and father-in-law in a retail potato chip business. She then became one of the first "Guide Girls" for Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Later she became the first female printer employed by Tape & Label Engineering Co. in St. Petersburg, Fl. After moving to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands in 1968, she designed and made clothing for renowned silk-screen artist Jim Tillett, that were sold in his boutique at what is now Tillett Gardens in St Thomas. After returning to Florida in 1972, she lived in Fort Myers, Orlando, and Ocala Fl. She then moved to Pikeville, TN where she loved living in the mountains. After becoming ill in 2009, she moved to Northport, AL., to be closer to her daughter's family. Janet was a wonderful wife and mother. She accepted Christ into her life as a child. Janet was preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Elsie (Smith) McMullen. Janet is survived by her spouse David of Northport, Al; her daughter Susan (Tommy) Rosenstiel of Tuscaloosa, Al; her grandchildren, Henry and Elizabeth. Prior to her death she made over 550 knit hats for cancer patients and nurses in Tuscaloosa. A Celebration of Janet’s life will be held graveside at Rigsby Cemetery on Wooden Loop Rd in Pikeville, TN on Thursday July 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. CST. In lieu of flowers the family requests that you do something for someone you love. Arrangements entrusted to Pikeville Funeral Home.
